The name of my typeface, "Zhu Ti", literally means "Architectural Form" in Chinese. It originated from my interest in the geometry found in everyday life. Living in a concrete jungle as dense as Hong Kong's gave me ample inspiration, and I began a visual archive of all the interesting shapes and negative space observed in the buildings that surrounded me. I realized that it was not purely the geometry, but the ways in which structures ebbed and flowed that appealed to me. And it is the irregular visual rhythm that distinguishes Zhu Ti from the more rigid, restrained geometric typefaces.

Much like the humble appearance of an actual black box, the behind-the-scenes work that the company does is often invisible but essential. A simple logotype is created to symbolize this, with the BlackBox icon "disguised" as what may first seem like the period punctuation mark.

The BlackBox icon is further developed to represent its 3 main areas of service: Analytics, Strategy, and Consultation.

The group project consisted of Germans as well as students from other parts of the world, which was appropriate given the brief. The project was inspired by Point It— a "Traveller's Language Kit" by Dieter Graf made up entirely of pictures, and we aimed to create an equivalent for designers: a picture-only "dictionary" that enables creative collaboration across language barriers.

The design process is so vast that we had to narrow it down to product design to begin tackling the challenge with the limited time we had, so a balance was struck between feasibility concerns and the inherently experimental nature of the project. It was a very interesting experience exploring visual communication with design students from all over the world. Cultural differences, taboos, and the universality of design are all topics we concerned ourselves with.

I contributed photos for the booklets, as well as helped design the icons dividing up the sections, which range from general feedback such as approval and qualifiers, to specific design concerns like product add-ons and materials, to abstract concepts such as style.

It was the brand assigned to me, for which I had to research with my groupmates, and then each come up with an individual proposal.

Like most Hong Kong tea restaurants, Mido does not have a clear visual identity holding everything together. But it was exactly the eclectic nature of the restaurant that I found charming during the visit.  Mido is disorganized, but wonderfully so. It feels like an old man that, despite his age, has a certain charm and playfulness in him that he does not bother to show people.

Mido is quite established in the local community. Rather than ruining its organic charm by over-designing the existing restaurant, I propose new branches that build upon the Mido fame, re-interpreting itself in a youthful, modern way. The original Mido will always remain unmistakable, but the new branches, while serving a younger audience, will also be part of the Mido family. They may be more "designed" than their older countrpart, but the Cantonese slogan "乜都得“, meaning  "Anything goes", echoes the eclectic charm of the original restaurant.

Elements of the old Mido are there, like the beautiful color palate in the original logotype. But the English name integrated into the logo, and the bright accent colors against the brown also put an unabashedly youthful spin on the identity. The look and feel does not reach the level of  pastiche, but there is a sense of self-awareness and playful juxtaposition in the visual references. The cheap colorful paper on which menus are printed (ubiquitous in tea restaurants) look fresh with updated typography. The cups and dishes retain their traditional shapes and patterns, but are now transparent.

Cantonese vernacular slangs are also used throughout the stationery, website, and commercials, so that the new brand does not lose its old one's charm and intimacy.

In short, the new Mido is like the young, outspoken son of the old restaurant. He has his father's DNA, and is not afraid to flaunt it.
